Ocean change forecasting for climate resilience in Aotearoa

feature image

About the Project

Oceans affect everything in New Zealand – from local weather to the productivity of our industries.

The oceans in the region are warming faster than the global average creating changes to weather and the coastal ocean that will challenge the resilience of our society and economy.

We are team of oceanographers, atmospheric, and social science experts who will assess:

  • Future coastal ocean temperatures and marine heat waves
  • Changes in extreme weather events due to the changing ocean
  • Coastal ocean thermal refugia and hot spots
  • Forecasting ocean surface temperatures

Near Real Time Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly

The anomaly is today's sea surface temperature compared to a fixed late-1980s (1985-1990 + 1993) baseline, estimated using 28 years of satellite data (1985-2012). Warm colours indicate warmer than baseline conditions; cool colours indicate cooler. Data is updated daily courtesy of NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW). Read more on the NOAA CRW Methodology page.
